Patient might need a bone marrow transplant if patient’s bone marrow stops working and does not produce enough healthy blood cells.

Autologous bone marrow transplant

This type of transplant involves the use of a patient’s stem cells. They involve harvesting the patient’s cell before damaging therapy like chemotherapy or radiation. The cells return to the body after the treatment is done. It can only be used for patients with healthy bone marrow. The technician doing the collection freezes the collected stem cells before storing them for later use. Using this transplant offers various advantages over stem cells from another donor. For example, the cells are always compatible. Global Hospitals has some of the best surgeons for autologous bone marrow transplant in Mumbai.

It is used for people who undergo high doses of chemotherapy and radiation for curing their diseases. These treatments are likely to damage the marrow. Autologous BMT helps to restore the damage. In this type of transplant, doctors generally collect or harvest stem cells called peripheral blood stem cells. This process is more straightforward than an allogeneic transplant, which acquires stem cells from another donor. It does not require operations or general anaesthesia. When undergoing an autologous or allogeneic BMT, patients are given medicines to increase the number of stem cells in their blood.

Further, the stem cells are filtered from the blood before the patient goes through high doses of cancer treatment like chemo, etc. Finally, healthy bone marrow cells are infused back into the body of the patient. The hospital has some of the best doctors for autologous bone marrow transplant in Mumbai.

There are no side effects to the transplant as such. But occasionally, patients tend to experience a funny taste in mouth, chills, nausea, etc. The urine could also be tinged red for the first 24 hours post-transplantation.

Allogeneic BMT

An allogeneic stem cell transplant utilizes healthy blood stem cells from a donor to replace the diseased or damaged bone marrow. An allogeneic stem cell transplant is also known as an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. The donor in this type of operation can be a family member, an acquaintance, or an unknown person. The blood stem cells utilized in an allogeneic stem cell transplant could be:

  • Gathered from the donor’s blood
  • Gathered from the bone marrow within the donor’s hipbone
  • Gathered from the blood of a donated umbilical cord

Before receiving the transplant, the patient will receive high doses of chemotherapy or radiation for destroying the diseased cells and prepare the body for the donor cells.

Allogeneic BMT can be a choice for people with a wide range of cancerous and noncancerous diseases, like acute leukaemia, adrenoleukodystrophy, aplastic anaemia, chronic leukaemia, etc. Global Hospitals has some of the best surgeons for allogeneic bone marrow transplants in Mumbai. The different types of allogeneic transplants based on the source of stem cells include:

  • Allogeneic BMT using related donor: Here, the stem cells are extracted from a relative.
  • Allogeneic BMT using matched unrelated donor: Here, the donor is searched by doctors from an international registry.
  • Allogeneic BMT using haploidentical donors: The procedure utilizes HLA half-matched (haplotype) donors like biological parents, children, or half-matched siblings.
  • Allogeneic transplant using the blood of umbilical cord: Here, the blood cells are extracted from the umbilical cord of a new-born baby.
  • Reduced-Intensity conditioning allogeneic transplants: This is an option for patients who can’t endure a full-intensity or myeloablative allogeneic transplant.

The following procedures collect the stem cells

  • Peripheral blood stem cells: They are gathered by a process called apheresis. This takes place in the therapeutic apheresis outpatient unit. During the procedure, blood from a large vein goes through a central venous catheter, to a cell separation machine. The peripheral blood stem cells are collected, and the remaining blood is returned.
  • Bone Marrow Harvest: In this procedure, a small portion of bone marrow is collected by a needle that goes through the skin, inside the marrow cavity of the hip bone.

The side effects of this type of transplant include increased risk of infections, excessive bleeding, graft-versus-host disease, etc. The hospital has some of the best doctors for allogeneic bone marrow transplants in Mumbai.
